Torrid Is An Expensive Weakness

An unintended consequence of growing up fat

When people learn you grew up fat, they think about the teasing. They think about someone coming up to you faking concern for your weight. They think about people making faces at you if you’re happily eating pasta instead of salad. They think about the many forced diets you went through, thinking, “You don’t want it enough.” while writing off your complaints.

Nobody talks about your siblings being your worst bullies. Or the family member who demands to see your medical records because they can’t believe someone as fat as you are in excellent health. Or the gaslighting that comes when you confront someone about their fatphobic bullshit. Or the creepiness of having old men leer at you because you’re too fat for kid’s clothes, so you must dress like you’re way older.

We’re not talking about that today. We’re talking about the double-edged sword that is has more plus-sized options available. I’m talking about quality plus-sized clothes being expensive and how easy it is to go broke.

I’m Not Alone, Am I?

Picture being a fat kid in the late 90s. Finding clothes is a bitch! You want to wear the same Disney memorabilia the other kids wear, but clothing stores don’t make clothes for kids your size.
