Strange Encounters In A Public Bathroom

How a random bathroom incident solidified my stance

It seems weird to go backward when writing about my tour of the South last week, but here we are. The story, with all of its awkwardness, is amusing. But I can see it coming off as creepy to people.

However, it does solidify my stance on bathroom politics. And it’s a story worth telling.

It Happened At A Random Gas Station Outside Of Nashville

It was mid-morning on Sunday. We stayed the night in Pulaski, Tennesee because of traffic jams and a snowstorm blowing through Louisville. After enjoying a Waffle House breakfast and encountering another traffic jam through Nashville, we needed a bathroom break.

I don’t remember the name of the gas station. I remember it being in the middle of nowhere. It stuck out to me for being one of the few places with multi-stall bathrooms on our trip.

I wasted no time going to the bathroom. There were two stalls. I sat in one. A minute later, I heard the door open. At first, the other person didn’t say anything. But ten seconds later, a man’s voice is profusely apologizing.

“I’m sorry, I needed to go,” he kept saying, “The other bathrooms weren’t open, and I really need to…
