She Reads by the Tree

Every day after school
he sees her
sitting beneath a tree.
Her back pack at her feet
and a new book in her hands.
She has a new title
every day.
Her face is hidden
behind the pages,
and she rocks back and forth
as she reads.
The more she moves,
the better the book,
or so it seems
to him.
He wonders if she’d notice
if he sat with her
while he read a book
of his own.
They don’t have to speak
but simply read.
Maybe they’d be friends
from their stories.
One day he’ll bring a book
to join her
and then see what happens
from there.
