I wanted to write a sentimental article about turning thirty-five last month. I had this idea of creating thirty-five life lessons and observations and taking a shot at humor. I’m thirty-five, but I’m not dead, right?

But the night of my birthday, I started coughing, and my throat started hurting. I had a rough day at work, so I figured I was tired from that. Working on my birthday never ends well.

The next morning, I couldn’t get out of bed. When I was awake, I couldn’t stop coughing. When I slept, I either shivered or sweat. I didn’t eat anything but drank some broth and Vernor’s. The coughing got so bad, my boyfriend thought he needed to take me to the hospital. But I told him no.

When I finally had the strength to go to the doctor’s, they gave me powerful steroids to stop the coughing. They worked, but they knocked me out.

Here’s the messed-up part. I found out I lost ten pounds from being sick. It’s not the weight loss that had me scratching my head, but the reactions when I mentioned it.
