Happy Deer Day To Those Who Celebrate

November 15th is finally here. It’s the first day of rifle season! Hunters can finally get the big guns to get that elusive 12-point buck. It’s one of the best days to run a bar up North!

The kids get an extra day to sleep in, too! An extra day off from school? Some free, tasty meat your parents get? It’s a great day for everyone!

Unless you’re not from Northern Michigan. I’ll never forget being in college and having people look at me strangely when I asked if we get Deer Day off there. Most of my classmates had no idea what Deer Day was!

It’s a good thing I had the common sense to ask instead of skipping classes thinking we had an extra day off! That would’ve been embarrassing thinking everywhere is the same as my hometown!

At the same time, it has me thinking. Is Northern Michigan the only place in the US that has November 15th off for hunting?

When I traveled to China, I met many Americans. Texas, of all places was the state that sounded similar to Northern Michigan! We had the same jokes about the weather and hitting deer when driving. (It’s a rite of passage here.)

But what I don’t remember is if Texas had November 15th off too. Did the Home Depots in Texas also sell chest freezers based on how many deer they can fit? (Yes, I realize how morbid that sounds when I write…
