Dear Fellow Michiganders: No, Whitmer’s Lockdown is Not Like Living in China

I lived in Beijing for six years. The restrictions don’t compare

On Thursday, there were hundreds of people protesting in Michigan. It’s the second one since Whitmer started putting strict restrictions on the state.

I get it. It’s a scary time right now. People are out of work and have bills to pay. It’s hard for any kids at home to understand why they can’t go to their friend’s house or see their grandparents right now.

On the flip side, there are people scared of getting sick glad they can have time off work without getting worried about losing their jobs.

Most people are annoyed with the restrictions the governor put on the state, but they’re getting through it. These people will probably have the largest parties once the stay at home orders get lifted.

But there’s a small number of people protesting the order, even though a lot of restrictions got relaxed. Some got brave and started comparing the limits to China.

I used to live in China, and I have a lot of foreign friends still living there now, despite the pandemic. While I feel for those protesting, comparing Michigan to China is not okay.
